Editorial Policy

This page explains how the content on My Vision Explained is researched, written and corrected. It is here so you can judge the site instead of trusting it.

Who writes and reviews

All content is written by Rhea Calder, a licensed optician certified by the American Board of Opticianry, with nineteen years in an optometry practice. Her background and her limits are described on the about page. Nothing on this site is written by an anonymous contributor.

What counts as a source

Claims about anatomy, mechanism, prevalence and risk come from primary sources. In practice that means the National Eye Institute, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Optometric Association, peer reviewed literature indexed in PubMed, and manufacturer documentation when the question is about a specific device or lens material.

Three things never count as sources here: a product landing page, a content farm answer, and another blog. If a number appears on this site, it can be traced to a primary source, and if we cannot trace it, we do not publish it.

What we will not do

  • We do not diagnose. A page can tell you what a symptom usually means. It cannot tell you what yours means.
  • We do not promise outcomes. Floaters, in particular, usually become less noticeable rather than going away, and we say so instead of selling hope.
  • We do not recommend a treatment, a procedure or a supplement as a solution to a symptom it was never tested against.
  • We do not write scare copy. Urgency is reserved for the symptoms that are genuinely urgent, and those are listed on every symptom page in the same place, with the same wording.

How pages are structured

Each page answers one question, states the answer in the first few lines, then explains the mechanism, separates what is common from what is not, marks the emergency signs, and says what you can reasonably do today. If a question does not have a clear answer in the literature, the page says that rather than filling the gap.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we want to fix it. Write to contact us with the page and the problem. Corrections that change the meaning of a page are made in the text itself, not hidden in a note at the bottom, and the page records when it was last reviewed.

Advertising

An ad appearing next to an article is not a recommendation, and no advertiser has any input into what is written here. How advertising data is handled is described in the privacy policy.
